It meets MIL-STD-810H military durability standards, having passed 19 tests covering temperature shock, rain, salt fog, humidity, sand and dust, vibration, shock, and immersion. An IP67 waterproof rating adds further protection against water ingress, and the radio is designed to float if dropped in water. Operability in tough conditions is a priority: a large front PTT button allows easy use even with gloves, and a dual PTT design provides additional control flexibility. Vibration alerts ensure incoming calls are never missed in noisy environments. The 2000 mAh lithium-ion battery supports up to 18–20 hours of use per charge, and NOAA weather alert reception keeps teams informed of changing conditions. The RB48 operates on 22 FRS channels and is license-free. It is compatible with other FRS devices, subject to matching channel and privacy code settings.
